I wouldn’t go with a very high stall, just something with a little higher RPM grab to help get the engine in a more powerful rpm before it gets gagged by the converter. It would make a big difference.
Now that I think of it, my cousin might have something for you. We put a slightly higher stall TCI converter in the blue ’65 Chevelle when it had a TH350, but has since been upgraded to a 700R4 with a lockup converter. The slightly used TCI unit might still be available on the cheap. I can ask.
