After a successfull purchase last year on E-bay, my new ride arrived somewhere in Juli 2015. It is a Ford Galaxie ’66 500 XL fastback 390 4V with pb, ps, at, ac, bucketseats, matchingnumbers, and the original car invoice from Hardaway motor company in Georgia.
I bought it unseen and took the change that the car was a dump. When it arrived last year, it looked like the pictures. some rust at the rear, trunk floor gone. Every panel a dent, or cracks in paint, etc. But it fired right up after filling the tank and carb. And it rides so smooth, I still can’t believe it. I previously owned a Mustang ’66 coupe, a Cadillac ’66 Sedan Deville and a Chevrolet Caprice Classic from whatever year, those cars did not drive as good as my Galaxie (maybe the Cadi did).
Obviously it had no Dutch license, so that was the first thing to be realised. I replaced the sealed beams, all the brakelines, fixed the dashboard light, wipers and that was it. It made it easely through the inspection.
After that was done, I choose to get all the old paint and bondo of with sandblasting, sanding and grinding and a lot of sweat. It needed some welding, what I did last winter. I installed a new trunk floor, repaired the lower quarter panels and doorcorners and a rusty edge around the rear window. That all took about 6 months and the weekends. in the mean time chrome stuff like bumpers etc. are at the chromery (the store where they chrome stuff) . In januari I desided I was going to fix the interior myself, so bought leather, a sewing machine and started unpicking the upholstery. Now that all is done, the sanding has started..
I hope to be ready within two months for the paintshop. So I have two more months for the right color. I can use some help with that. The original color, Sahara beige is not bad, together with a black roof, it can look good. maybe gunmetal grey, or Ciprian / nightmist blue. I don’t know help me out on this please ;-).
Oh yeay, next year when this project is finished and another still to start project as well, I will do the chassis, engine, wheels, brakes and su
spension on the Galaxie. It probably is not the best order (isn´t it?), but I really want to drive it august, what would not have been possible if I did the chassis first and than afterwards the body..Ok, pictures!

Brought the radiator to a specialist to built a new one and directly fit the new electronic fans, which arrived today in the delivery.
Fresh black mat chassis paint, directly sprayed on the metal after sandblasting.
All the bolts are galvanized with gold color (or some proces that looks like galvanize)The flat upperside of this quarterpanel is almost done.
This side still has to be done.
But first thing tomorow is finishing the hood.

More bondo and sanding
Last layers of epoxy over the bondo
to protect every inch of metal and bondo
Three layers of grey filler and primer
Time for waterproof sanding!!!
So smoothLets go to the paintshop. Ah yeah in the mean time I figured the color for the car..
Attachments:10/30/2016 at #8212brutus850ParticipantSo non of the colors I mentioned became the one I really liked. Finally I get the right color. It is from Ford from 1966 and it came on the Galaxie as well back then.
It is Nightmist Blue.
Even the painter gave me compliments for my sanding skills, I do like the process of restoring a car. It will absolutely not be my last car.
The rebuilt has begun. The engine got new fluids, hoses, radiator, waterpump, heater core, thermostat, revised starter engine, coil, 100 amps alternator, etc. I ditched the visco fan for 2 electric fans.
It fired right up after not running for 9 months..11/08/2016 at #8216V8 StaffKeymasterLooking good! Really like the color!

The car is driving very smooth. In the future I want to do some big things like discbrakes, engine rebuild and maybe another gearbox 4 speed. But for now I like it how it is going. The sound of the two short exhaustpipes is awesome. As you can see on the pictures I did not repclace every logo, or emblem. I like it like this, what do you think? I did not put Ford on the trunk, Galaxie on the rear sides, 350 on the front panels and the three stripes on the rear (in Dutch it is called the B-style). In my opinion the interi or matches very well with the exterior color. Enjoy.
