Although we used a 3M Sun Gun to illuminate the panels, it was best to see them in sunlight.

The thin panel below was sprayed when the car was painted the first time, before the accident.

Next, we prepped the panels for the last coat of primer and finally basecoat. Normally, we strip and spray the entire door shell, but in this case it was an insurance job, and they insurance company was not paying for anything extra, so we masked the areas to be hidden by the door panel when the car is finished.

The House Of Kolor base was sprayed in the jambs.

New hardware was sprayed to match.

Next, a little clear, and the magic happens!

The body was brought in for another round of high-build primer. We like the FBS Pro Mask paper system for this, as the tape is pre-applied and it has a built-in cutting edge.

After the primer was cured, the car was reverse-masked and the jambs were primed.

Color and clear were applied to the jambs, and the car was un-masked for preparation of the outside panels for color.

The exterior panels were all reinstalled on the car and aligned for exterior color.

The fender flares and extensions were all prepped as well. These required a flexible additive to prevent the primer and paint from cracking later.

The body was brought back into the paint booth and masked for the House Of Kolor kandy paint scheme.

The color appears to be light in the beginning, but additional coats darken the color and add the deep flake appearance.

After the desired color is achieved, the clear is applied and the color comes to life!

The car was put out in the sun to help the clear cure and outgas. The color really pops when the sun shines!

After a few days, the crew jumped back on the car to start the wetsand and buff process. Any isolated dust particles or rough spots are sanded with 800 grit, then the whole car is sanded with the 3M Trizact process of 1000, 1200, 1500, 3000, and 5000 grit wet paper on a D/A sander and by block.

Here, ½ of the hood has been polished with compound.

Panel by panel the entire car is polished.

The team re-installs the nose and rear bumper covers, as well as new weatherstrip and rubber details.

The interior was cleaned and reinstalled.

Here, some of the new Trans Am decals have been applied, and the new 18” billet snowflake wheels and tires are installed. They gave the car a whole new look.

Overall, the car came out looking far nicer than when it came in, and the updated wheel and tire package gives it a modern attitude. The V8 Speed & Resto Shop Crew was very happy the owner liked the results!

It’s fun to go back to the first photos and notice how much better the panels fit, especially the rear wing pieces. Also note the lack of sanding scratches and paint texture in the finished car. The kandy color was tricky, but the results were worth the efforts!

UPDATE: We’ve just learned that the V8 Speed & Resto Shop-Restored 1979 Pontiac Trans Am won the Gearheads4Life Editor’s Choice Award and Best Paint at 2016 Street Machine Nationals in DuQuoin, IL!

Congratulations to Molly Fischer and her 1979 Pontiac Trans Am for winning 2 major awards at the 2016 Street Machine Nationals in DuQuoin, IL! Molly’s Pontiac has a storied history.. It was restored the first time by her husband Will and a friend and saw weekend and show duty until ironically being wrecked at the very show where it recently won the awards!

Very nice work. I have never painted a whole vehicle candy. Little to nerve racking for me. You all nailed it.

Love what you did with the fender flares and extension. Nice detailing and paint job too. Impressive work!
