The TMI TRIM Awards at The SEMA Show 2022 set the industry on fire. With the lack of awards from a few companies that are normally at the show, TMI Products stepped up to give the recognition that these builders deserved. Builders from all over the world entered for the coveted title of Best of Show – but only one amazing ride was able to take home that trophy.

Seven other winners were awarded in their respective classes and the TMI TRIM Awards were firmly cemented into the SEMA Show history books. After the week, coverage spread like wildfire of the TRIM Awards and they were seen by over 57 million enthusiasts.

The TMI TRIM Awards pay homage to the craftsmen who hand cut, stitched, and designed all the amazing interiors at SEMA. Too often though, the paint, wheels, or engine received most all of the recognition – no longer is that the case where TMI is now honoring fellow tradesmen who have perfected their craft.

TMI Products has been hand crafting some of the finest automotive upholstery for over 40 years now. With 40 years in the rear-view mirror, it was time to give back to the community and recognize those special builders. TMI is continuing this new tradition with the TRIM Awards for the 2023 SEMA Show.

Last years Best of Show winner wasn’t even a TMI Products interior, showing how serious TMI is about recognizing the best of the best. In fact, TMI doesn’t even choose the winners; for that, a completely independent panel of six industry veterans go over every inch of the car and then determine the winners.

The expert panel of judges include:

  • Kevin Oeste- The Voice of the SEMA Show and TRIM Awards Host, V8 Speed & Resto Shop Owner
  • Sean Holman- Owner of Use For Adventure and Co-Host of The Truck Show Podcast
  • Sara Morosan- Owner of LGE-CTS Motorsports, 2021 SEMA Person of the Year, Multi-time Ford Design award winner
  • Theresa Contreras- owner of Baja Forged, Multi-time Ford Design award winner, PPG Brand Ambassador
  • Marcel Venable- co-owner of AutoRevolution on Amazon Prime, OBS-Clash, Car Guy Confessions Podcast
  • Jason Mulligan- co-owner of AutoRevolution on Amazon Prime, OBS-Clash, Car Guy Confessions Podcast

The TMI TRIM Awards are designed to not only honor the builds and the craftsmen behind it, but to celebrate them in a public fashion. Wednesday November 1st at Noon all the judges and builders will convene at the stage in the TMI Products booth. Here, the judges will go over some of the highlights and announce winners in front of the entire Central Hall at The SEMA Show 2023.

The trophies are just as unique and custom as the interiors and can easily be hoisted in the air in a show of appreciation and accomplishment during the awards ceremony. While there are a few winners, only one ride will be crowned as the Best of Show!

To be eligible for the TRIM Awards, you need to have a vehicle that’s registered and on display at the SEMA Show 2023. There are categories for TMI-equipped vehicles, and categories for non-TMI-equipped vehicles. Having a TMI-equipped vehicle though does not offer a better chance of winning, as proven by last year’s Best of Show winner, that was not TMI-equipped.

SEMA 2022 is upon us and once again we are making the pilgrimage to the Las Vegas Convention Center to walk amongst all the innovative companies that make the automotive industry the juggernaut that it is. TMI Products will be among the many booths showing off the interior products that make them a leader in the industry but want to take it one step further and recognize the builders that have created one-of-a-kind vehicles with the TRIM Awards.

The TRIM Awards is a highlight of all the incredible vehicle builds that will be at SEMA 2022 and will be focusing on the interiors. The cars, trucks, SUVs, and wagons that grace the floors and booths of that cavern of steel and concrete are built to the utmost precision and feature the best that the aftermarket manufacturers have to offer. These vehicles are equipped with the latest parts to make their engines go faster, suspensions perform better, body panels appear straighter, and interiors shine brighter.

TMI is the leader in creating complete interior components that are ready to install and wants to recognize all the hard work that these builders have put forth in building these visual masterpieces. The SEMA show is known for having the best of the best vehicles on display, and their choices for interiors are something to behold. A finely appointed vehicle can truly be elevated if the interior is on par with the rest of the vehicle.

Since SEMA is a collection of the best vehicles that the automotive community can offer, TMI wanted to recognize the best of those vehicles and what the owners chose for their interior. The TRIM Awards were created to recognize the forethought that it took to not only create a finely crafted custom vehicle but to incorporate the interior into that design. Since the TRIM Awards will be given outlive at SEMA 2022, only the most detailed and creative interior installs will be considered.

The awards themselves are designed to not only honor the achievement of the winner but to do so in a very public way. Too often, awards are crafted in an unrecognizable shape from a material that is hard to decipher from far away. TMI wanted the TRIM Awards to be clearly visible when the winners display it at their house or garage and be able to easily hoist it up in the air to show how excited the winner is. The awards were also a way to get a group of like-minded vehicle builders into the same area and let them share in their achievements both out on floor of the convention center and up on stage. But it’s not just an award that our winners will be getting, each individual category winner will receive $500 voucher, and our Best of Show Champion will receive a certificate for a complete interior for their next build (value of $8,000) that can be used to purchase TMI interior products for a future build.

Giving out the awards will be a panel of insiders from the aftermarket industry including the TRIM Awards Host Kevin Oeste of V8 Speed & Resto Shop as well as being the voice of SEMA 2022. Veteran from the publishing industry with Sean Holman who is the Content Director of the Truck and Off-Road Group at Motor Trend and the co-host of The Truck Show Podcast.  Sara Morosan, the 2021 SEMA Person of the year, multi-Ford Design award winner and co-owner of LGE/CTS Motorsports. Theresa Contreras, PPG Brand ambassador, Multi Ford Design award winner and co-owner of LGE/CTS Motorsports. Last but not least, we have the custom automotive video team of Marcel Venable and Jason Mulligan who are the co-owners of Auto Revolution on Amazon Prime.

To enter your vehicle, you first need to have a vehicle on display at SEMA 2022. The awards will be given away on stage in the TMI Booth during the week of SEMA at the TMI booth, located in the Central Hall, booth #24477, at 12:00PM on Wednesday. In order to accept your trophy, you need to be present during the awards ceremony. That way you can get up on stage and proudly hold up your award proving you beat out literally everyone else displaying a vehicle.

https://youtu.be/Eze9x2l_wls

Our first race car from The Brother’s Collection is an awesome 1968 Dodge Hemi Dart! There were about “factory built” 80 Dodge Darts stuffed with the 426 Hemi V8 back in 1968. They were pulled from the Hamtramck, Michigan assembly line as unfinished 383 powered Dart GTS cars, then were sent to the Hurst Performance Research Facility for the option code LO23 conversion designed to compete in the white-hot NHRA Super Stock drag class. The fenders and hood were fiberglass, and the doors and bumpers were submerged in Nitric Acid, a process which thins and lightens the steel panels to trim the car down to 3000 lbs. Hemi Darts were powered by the 12.5:1 compression race 426 Hemi V8 engine, complete with dual 4-barrel carbs on a cross-ram style intake manifold. The Dana rear axle was stuffed with 4.86:1 gears when coupled with the 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. The recipe worked, as this car ran 10.19 at 132 in the quarter mile back in 1972. Learn the whole story in episode 308 of Muscle Car Of The Week!

Next up is a purpose built 2010 Ford Mustang called the FR500CJ, and it’s a modern version of the factory built drag cars of the 1960s. Back in 2008, Ford commemorated the successful 1968 Mustang 428 Super Cobra Jet cars by releasing the 2008 FR500 Cobra Jet racer, and this is the 2010 evolution of that car. Much like the 6 Super Cobra Jet cars prepared by Holman-Moody for NHRA Super Stock Racing in ‘68, the modern versions are track-only racers built from basic Mustang bodies and only equipped with parts needed to go fast. A total of 50 were built in the Ford Racing facility. Under the composite hood lives a supercharged aluminum 5.4L Super Cobra Jet V8, producing over 900 HP thanks to stout internals and a 4 litre Ford Performance Whipple supercharger. A race-prepped C4 automatic transmission and a Strange 9” aluminum housing rear axle equipped with 35 spline axles and 4.88 gears helped these run low 10s in the quarter. Learn all about it in episode 264 of Muscle Car Of The Week.

Our next racer features the car and a special driver interview with 3-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser! The car is a purpose-built stock car built by Bill Stroppe and Holman & Moody and is powered by a Smokey Yunick built Boss 429 that Unser drove to the Pike’s Peak victory in 1969. The legendary cast of characters in the story includes Bunkie Knudsen, Smokey Yunick, Bill Stroppe, Holman & Moody, and many others, and Unser tells the fascinating story as if it happened yesterday. Unser had not seen the car since ‘69, but he was surprised to learn that the car remains in as-raced condition today. The display was a huge hit at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals, and the car is a very special piece of racing history in the Brothers Collection. See it in episode 200 of Muscle Car Of The Week!

Our next car was built not just to compete against other racers, but also to beat other automakers in the sales game. This 1962 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty is a factory-built drag-car designed to win on the track, and also to drive sales at the local Pontiac dealership. Pontiac was not a very exciting brand in the early-mid 1950s, but they decided to change their image and go for younger buyers in the late ‘50s, and cars like this one were the result. These were built right on the factory assembly line, using parts developed by performance companies with Pontiac part numbers assigned to them to make them legal for competition use in the Super Stock class. It’s powered by the race-bred 421 V8 making 405 HP under aluminum front body panels.

Finally, we cap off our look at race cars in The Brothers Collection with the first car we featured on this show, which is also the very first 1969 Camaro ZL1 ever built, complete with it’s all-aluminum 427 V8 poking through the hood. This is the first of 69 ZL-1 Camaros ever built, and was delivered to Fred Gibb Chevrolet on New Year’s Eve in 1968. Gibb and his crew transformed the car into a drag race record setter, and drove the car in races all over the country. Today there are less than 40 original ZL-1 Camaros still in existence, and this was featured in detail in Muscle Car Of The Week episode number 1!
