Modern Power and Performance for a 1970s Icon

The mid-1970s were not necessarily known for high performance American cars. The auto industry was in the middle strange time where power levels were down as they struggled to meet new emissions standards, American cars faced competition from smaller imported rides offering much better fuel economy. However, with today’s parts and technology, these “Malaise” era machines can be made to rock without body roll!

More Power is Never a Bad Thing

When a great customer asked us to find a ‘76 Chevy El Camino, thoughts of an underpowered and overweight colonnade style truckster came to mind. The good thing is that it wouldn’t have to stay that way. We ditched the anemic 305 for an 430 HP, aluminum headed, roller cammed 383 stroker / 4L80E auto combination topped by a Holley EFI system which more than doubled the power. NOW this El Camino really hauls!

Straightening The Curves

But perhaps the biggest improvements came in the suspension upgrades. Up front, we replaced the worn out parts with a complete QA1 Level 2 suspension system. This gave us tubular upper and lower control arms, an upsized sway bar, and adjustable coil over shocks for tunability. A Borgeson steering gear with a 12.7:1 ratio really tightened up the steering response. The rear axle was refreshed with an Eaton TrueTrac limited slip differential and 3.73 gears, and it’s all held in place with QA1 adjustable rear arms and coil overs. Wilwood disc brakes are used at all 4 corners, and a set of Vision 18” billet Chevy Rally wheels not only look right-on, but allow for bigger and better Continental boogie shoes. The stance is slightly lowered, and is outta-site!

This clean 1947 Dodge pickup truck came to the V8 Speed & Resto Shop after the new owner discovered that the old Dodge just didn’t have the oats to keep up with modern traffic on the highway. He wanted to be able to drive his new rig wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted, so a plan was developed to re-power the Dodge and retire the original flathead engine.
