1978 Pontiac Trans Am Pro Touring Build Preview
V8 …Speed and Resto Shop is excited to share a preview of our latest project: a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am pro touring build. This car is being built from the ground up to be a high-performance, road-handling machine.
Under the hood, we’re installing a 480 horsepower LS3 engine. The LS3 is a popular choice for pro touring builds because it’s powerful, reliable, and relatively lightweight. We’re also installing a Detroit Speed subframe to stiffen the chassis and improve handling.
In the rear, we’re installing a Heights independent rear suspension system. This system offers several advantages over the stock leaf spring suspension, including improved handling, ride quality, and weight reduction.
In addition to the mechanical upgrades, we’re also making some cosmetic changes to the car. We’re installing Vintage Air air conditioning, American Autowire wiring, and YearOne 19-inch Snowflake wheels.
We’re excited to see how this build turns out. We’re confident that it will be a world-class pro touring car that is both fun to drive and beautiful to look at.
Here is a more detailed look at some of the specific components and upgrades that we’re using on this build:
Engine: 480 horsepower LS3 crate engine
Transmission: Tremec T-56 six-speed manual transmission
Chassis: Detroit Speed subframe
Suspension: Heidts independent rear suspension system with coil-over shocks
Brakes: Wilwood four-wheel disc brakes
Wheels: YearOne 19-inch Snowflake wheels
Air conditioning: Vintage Air system
Wiring: American Autowire harness
We’re also planning to make some additional upgrades to the car, such as:
Adding a limited-slip differential to the rear axle
Upgrading the fuel system to support the increased power output
Adding a custom exhaust system
We’ll be sure to share more updates on this build as we progress. Stay tuned for future videos and blog posts!
