## 🔶 Striking Gold: Painting Stripes and EFI Install on a Placer Gold 1972 Chevrolet Camaro at V8 Speed and Resto

The second generation Chevrolet Camaro is a timeless American performance …car, known for its sleek design and powerful engines. This particular Camaro came to the V8 Speed and Resto Shop looking for some appearance and performance upgrades. To achieve this, a comprehensive list of parts was carefully selected and installed.

## Stripe It Up

The Camaro arrived at the shop looking like it was missing something… and that was the Z-28 style stripes to offset all that Placer Gold paint. Black was chosen for the stripes, which perfectly accented the black and white houndstooth interior of the Camaro. After a paint inspection, it was revealed that the hood and fenders had a few chips and scratches in them, so the plan was made to strip the hood and repaint the nose of the car in Gold and before shooting the stripes. The rear of the car did not require quite as extensive of a spray job, so the existing paint was prepped for the stripe application.

## By The Book

Laying out stripes is a tricky operation, and the V8 Speed and Resto Shop paint team utilized the factory Chevrolet measurements to ensure a proper appearance. Once the design was laid out and masked, the black was laid out and buried in clear. After a period of time to let the paint cure, the new paint was wet sanded and buffed to perfection, with no detectable edge on the stripes. Ringbrothers hood hinges ensure smooth operation and precise adjustability of the hood, while adding a modern and technical appearance detail.

## Engine Upgrades

At the heart of the engine upgrade was the installation of a Terminator X EFI system. This modern fuel injection system replaced the original carburetor, providing precise fuel delivery and improved performance. To support the EFI system, several additional components were added, including a Holley fuel pump module, a mechanical fuel pump block-off plate, and a fuel pressure regulator. ARP fasteners were used throughout, and a Lokar transmission kick-down bracket and cable were fitted to ensure smooth gear changes.

## Ignition System Enhancements

The ignition system also received a major upgrade. A Holley Pro Billet distributor and a Blaster 2 coil were installed, ensuring reliable spark delivery and optimal engine performance. A new spark plug wire set was also fitted to enhance the ignition system’s efficiency.

## Steering and Transmission Upgrades

To improve the Camaro’s handling and drivability, a new Borgeson power steering gearbox and rag joint was installed. The Borgeson steering box enhances road feel while adding a level of precision to the Camaro’s steering that had eroded over the decades.

## The Result

With these upgrades, this stunning Gold 1972 Camaro has a whole new look, and is a more powerful and responsive machine. The Terminator X EFI system, combined with the upgraded ignition, steering, and transmission components, has given this classic muscle car a new lease on life. This Camaro is now ready to hit the road and turn heads.

## The Votes Are In!

We asked viewers what we should do with the original 250 cubic-inch six cylinder engine and Powerglide transmission. It was nearly a 50/50 spilt of people who responded, with the majority saying to keep the ortiginal 6!

– The car is all-original
– You don’t see many 6-cylinder engines in Camaros anymore
– It’s an interesting engine that can be made to perform

## The Restoration Begins

In this video, we began the disassembly of the Butternut Yellow 1969 Camaro to reveal the condition of the floors, trunk floor, and other body sheet metal. We were happy to see only minimal rust in the typical areas where Camaros tend to hold water and corrode.

## Engine Condition

We were able to start and run the engine using an external gas can. It seem to idle, OK, although the carburetor definitely needs a rebuild! ## Stuff You Don’t See Every Day

This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro is a bit out of the ordinary for several reasons:

– The car is all-original
– The exterior color is Butternut Yellow
– The interior color is green

## Striped For Style

This Camaro is wearing the code D69 stripes, which swoop over the wheel openings on the quarter panels and fenders, and it is also painted with the DX-1 hood and nose stripes. These wrap around the nose of the car and up the hood pointing to the windshield.

## Under The Hood

Another interesting part of this ’69 Camaro is the all-original 250 cubic-inch 6 cylinder engine, coupled to an automatic transmission. While 6 cylinder Camaros were popular when new, it seems most were converted to various V8 engines over the years for better performance and more power. However, this one is slated to stay with the original inline 6 during the car’s restoration.

## Let’s Make It New Again

The V8 Speed and Resto Shop team is tasked with completely restoring this happy little Camaro, complete with a repaint, new interior, suspension, and whatever else it needs to be a great driving car once again.

## Taking A Clean 1968 Plymouth GTX Up A Few Notches at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop

We recently had the pleasure to do some upkeep on this cool 1968 …Plymouth GTX at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop!

While most muscle cars are fairly basic by design, the GTX was Plymouth’s way to offer up a muscle car with a bit more style and comfort than a regular Roadrunner. Built on January 15, 1968, this GTX came standard with the Super Commando 440 V8 sporting a single 4-barrel carb, 10.1:1 compression, and whipped up 375 HP and 480 lb-ft. of torque. It’s clamped to a 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission spinning a sure-grip 3.23 rear gear, and it rolls on chrome Magnum 500 wheels. The original color was Burgundy Metallic, but we’re not complaining about the bright Matador Red repaint. We dig the styling details like the argent rear tail panel, the cool GTX badges, and the dual black stripes that flank the body. A clean grille is blacked-out to frame the GTX badge mounted front and center. The blacked-out hood has small side-facing simulated scoops, with 440 badges peeking out – almost like a clown lurking in the storm drain waiting for the next victim!

These cars handled well, with beefed-up torsion bars and shocks for better cornering, but manual 4-wheel drum brakes added muscle to the driver’s braking leg. However, the power steering is nice and light. The 440 rumbles sweetly through dual exhausts.

Inside, the GTX features bucket seats and a full-length console, with upscale wood grain door and dash trim. The 8000 RPM tach is the only round shaped gauge in the dash. Pretty cool.

We did some maintenance on this one at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop, and really enjoyed working on this clean ‘68. ## This Camaro is a great example of a 1970s – 1980s style Street Machine!

Wearing an Rally Sport …trim package and an SS badges, striping, and hood, this killer blue 1968 Chevrolet Camaro is a feast for the eyes. But what really has us jazzed are all the period-perfect accessories that give this Camaro a look we instantly recognize.

## The parts we all wanted “back in the day.”

It all starts with the stance… the jacked-up look which allowed for much wider wheels and rear tires. In this case, a polished set of US Mags aluminum “slots” wrapped with BFG rubber put the power of the small block V8 to the pavement. Note the ladder bar rear suspension supporting a Dana rear axle. Under the hood, the engine is wearing the prerequisite gold iridite plate Moroso valve covers, yellow Taylor spark plug wires, Edelbrock intake manifold, and long-tube headers. It’s a total time-warp.

## It’s got the right look on the inside, too.

We converted the Camaro to an automatic transmission at the owner’s request, and added a “horseshoe” shifter to the O.E. style console. The console features the Rally gauge package, and the car is also fitted with a Vintage Air A/C system for even cooler cruising. Houndstooth upholstery, deluxe door panels, and rosewood accents provide even more detail inside.

Overall, this is a very fun Camaro that has the ability to transport not only from point A to B, but also back in time. And although we’ve built all kinds of Camaros here at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop, we’re always happy to see how many different ways these cars can be personalized and made cool.

It’s not a Delorean, but this Camaro SS is a time machine.

Nostalgia is a powerful force, and for the owner of this super cool 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, it’s turned up …to 11. You see, this is not only a really cool 1967 Camaro, with it’s factory-installed first year 350 V8, Rally Sport (RS) appearance package, and Super Sport (SS) performance goodies, but it’s a valued family member that has returned to the fold.

The Car
When a car arrives at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop, we like to verify it’s identity to see what we’re working with. This time, the VIN and cowl trim tag spell out how this car was built in the first week of November, and was originally painted Butternut Yellow with matching interior and black vinyl top. The RS SS packages are original, as appears the new for 295 horsepower 350 V8 and 4-speed manual transmission installed at the Los Angeles (Van Nuys) CA plant.

The Story
The owner was fortunate to have some great times in the car “back in the day”, as he and his brother would drive it in high school together. As you can imagine, there are many stories about those days. Unfortunately, his brother is no longer with us, and the Camaro got away from the family. However, our customer’s wife eventually located the car, purchased it, and presented it back to the owner for a very special birthday present. We can only imagine the flood of memories and emotions that day when he slid behind the wheel of this treasured Camaro once again.

Next steps for the Camaro SS
After reviewing the condition of the Camaro, the owner determined he needed a hand to get it back on the road. He contacted us at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop to evaluate it’s condition and create a plan that brings the car right back to the condition it was in back in high school… or maybe a bit nicer! Although originally yellow, the owner’s experience and memories are with it in black, so black it should stay. We’ll go over the car and propose a least-invasive restoration and preservation to make it safe, reliable, and ready to burn up the streets once again.
