We upsized the wheels with some Forgeline rollers wrapped in Toyo Tires, and added oversized Baer brakes actuated by a HydraTech hydraulic brake assist unit. The car drove and handled very well, but the owner wasn’t happy with the aggressive manners of the 540. It was a great street / strip racing engine, but it wasn’t happy doing casual weekend rides and city driving.

He sent us the car with a new mission, keep the power but add some refinement. Make it a little more reliable and less angry without decreasing performance. This was a tall order, but modern technology provided the solution, a Chevrolet LT4 Supercharged V8 engine. Follow along as we install the 700 plus horsepower engine, high-pressure fuel system, dry sump oil system, methanol injection, a C&R cooling system, and all the electronics to make it run. It uses a Centerforce DYAD Clutch and a Tremec 6-Speed manual transmission.

Our customer wanted to drive this clean 1971 Chevrolet C-10 pickup as a daily driver, while improving performance, economy, and reliability. He brought his 1971 Chevrolet C10 Pickup to the V8 Speed and Resto Shop for an LS3 engine and 4L60 transmission swap.

In this 3 part video series, we swap in a fresh LS3 485 HP GM Connect & Cruise engine and 4L60E automatic overdrive transmission into this sweet 1971 Chevrolet C10 pickup truck. The benefits include reliable performance, 485 horsepower, better fuel economy, and more.

The engine came from Weir Chevrolet, our supplier for GM crate engines and such, and we tuned it with an HP Tuners suite. We used a Hooker engine mount set to bolt the LS3 into the truck. A Holley accessory drive was added to mount the alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor.

The whole rig is kept cool with an Entropy radiator and Spal cooling fans. The crew was able to connect to the existing A/C system in the truck and make it functional.

The fuel system starts with a reproduction fuel tank from Tanks, Inc., which comes redesigned to house a high-pressure EFI fuel pump, and an internal pump matched to the requirements of the LS3.

The truck’s vitals are monitored by a set of Dakota Digital VHX gauges, and a Dakota cruise control module is also used for easy highway cruising. A new rear gearset with 3.08 gears works better with the 4L60 overdrive transmission for snappy acceleration and economical highway cruising.

The truck project was a success, as the owner logged over 4000 miles in the first months of driving with little drama.

1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am LS …Engine Swap and Suspension at V8 Speed and Resto Shop Part 1. This 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was running the original 180 horsepower Oldsmobile 403 V8 engine, but our customer wanted more horsepower and better performance from his black TA. He brought the car to the V8 Speed & Resto Shop for an LS Engine Swap to a GM Performance Parts LS3 V8 backed by a 4L70E 4-speed automatic transmission making over 480 horsepower, powered by a Holley Dominator EFI system.

However, upon inspection, the Trans Am revealed some rusty floors and previous repair work that was not up to the owner’s standards. The V8 team replaced the bad sheet metal with all new floors from Classic Industries and fabricated a custom firewall.

Once the shell was solid again, they swapped in a complete Street Grip suspension system from Ridetech for better cornering and straight-line traction as well. Upgraded brakes from Wilwood were installed, along with a set of 17” Snowflake wheels from YearOne and new Nitto tires.

This 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was running the original 180 horsepower Oldsmobile 403 V8 engine, but our customer wanted more horsepower and better performance from his black TA. He brought the car to the V8 Speed & Resto Shop for a swap to a GM Performance Parts LS3 V8 backed by a 4L70E 4-speed automatic transmission making over 480 horsepower.

However, upon inspection, the Trans Am revealed some rusty floors and previous repair work that was not up to the owner’s standards. The V8 team replaced the bad sheet metal with all new floors from Classic Industries and fabricated a custom firewall.

Once the shell was solid again, they swapped in a complete Street Grip suspension system from Ridetech for better cornering and straight-line traction as well. Upgraded brakes from Wilwood were installed, along with a set of 17” Snowflake wheels from YearOne and new Nitto tires.

In this chapter, the V8 Speed & Resto Shop Crew build a custom fabricated aluminum air intake with K&N filter to make the factory Pontiac Shaker hood scoop functional with the LS engine swap. After running the part through the V8 Speed Body and Paint shop, They also put some test miles on the car to tune the Holley Dominator EFI system and evaluate the Ridetech Street Grip suspension system.

1969 Chevrolet C3 Corvette LS Swap …6 Speed Manual Transmission Swap at V8 Speed and Resto Shop Part 1

This 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible came to the V8 Speed and Resto Shop in need of some serious power, performance, and reliability upgrades. This C3 Corvette was powered by a non-original and well worn 350 cubic inch V8 backed by a Muncie 4 speed manual transmission. The goal was a Corvette LS Swap to add modern power to this C3 Corvette. A C3 Corvette LS Swap seems to be a simple job at first glance, but the more you investigate, you’ll see that a C3 Corvette LS Swap isn’t quite so simple.

The V8 Speed & Resto Shop team addresses the fitment issue of the LS3 V8 swap, as well as the steps needed to perform a Tremec T56 Magnum 6 speed manual transmission swap into the C3 Corvette. The challenges included fitting the off-center LS3 engine under the hood, as well as fitting the Tremec 6 speed manual transmission into the C3 Corvette chassis. We sourced our LS swap engine from GM Performance Parts, and a Tremec T56 Magnum 6 speed manual transmission, clutch, bellhousing, and shifter from Modern Driveline.

The V8 Speed and Resto Shop team fabricated a custom transmission tunnel to accommodate the T56, and special motor mounts were used to mount the LS3 engine. Exhaust is handled by Holley cast iron header manifolds, and the front LS swap accessory drive system is from Holley. A Holley Dominator EFI system manages the engine and fuel system.

Our crew rewired the Corvette with modern wiring, and added a custom fabricated air intake system and K&N air filter to allow the Corvette LS swap to breathe freely.

In addition, the Corvette needed some maintenance. For example, the C3 Corvette’s headlight doors are not working, and the windshield wiper door was also not working. These items rely on vacuum for power, and they wear out over time. The V8 Speed and Resto Shop team elected to install a Detroit Speed Corvette Headlight Motor conversion and a Detroit Speed Windshield Wiper conversion as well. These convert the vacuum systems to electric headlight motors and an electric wiper door.

The V8 Speed and Resto Shop team performed other upgrades to the C3 Corvette, including a dashboard gauge set from Dakota Digital and a modern air conditioning system from Vintage Air. A Custom Autosound bluetooth stereo provides enhanced connectivity and better sound quality.

Other performance upgrades include a Hydroboost brake system from Hydratech and 6-piston Wilwood disc brakes. A set of 17 inch YearOne aluminum Corvette style rally wheels were added along with performance tires.

The LS3 engine swap exhaust system was custom made, including a V8 Speed and Resto Shop fabricated stainless side pipe exhaust system filled with Magnaflow sound deadener.

Once completed, the V8 Speed and Resto Shop crew created a base tune to get the 480 horsepower LS3 engine running, and then used both a laptop computer and the Holley Dominator’s self-tuning ability to refine the LS3 engine tune. In the end, the Corvette LS Swap was a complete success, and the owner was able to drive this freshly repowered C3 Corvette home nearly 1000 miles without an issue.

This LS3 will be running a Holley Dominator EFI system to manage the engine. A Holley LS Swap oil pan is installed to clear the C3 Corvette frame.

Next, the V8 Speed & Resto Shop team installs a Holley LS accessory drive system on the Chevrolet Performance Parts 480 HP LS3 V8. This system installs the serpentine drive, the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor on the front of the LS3. The Holley Dominator engine wiring harness is installed before the engine is installed.

Then, they install a Tanks, Inc. electric fuel pump and tank in the 1969 Corvette to provide the high pressure fuel needed by the Holley Dominator engine management EFI system to properly run.
