Today, we’re taking a look at some of the more popular cats from the breed, ranging from small block screamers to Cobra Jet torquers!

First up is this awesome 1970 Mercury Cougar Boss 302 Eliminator from episode 272. This Competition Yellow Eliminator is one of just 2,268 built that year, and it’s fitted with all the cool Eliminator package goodies… and more. Eliminators wore a special racy appearance package with stripes and the rear spoiler, and they offered performance suspension and brakes for better handling. A Trans-Am inspired Boss 302 V8 brought the game, and this one is spinning a 4-speed, and it’s one of only 5 originally equipped with the Super Drag Pack option, which added 4.30:1 rear gears and a Detroit Locker differential, and a mandatory engine oil cooler to help the Boss keep it’s cool on the road.

Next, we’re easing into a 1971 Mercury Cougar 429 Cobra Jet 4-Speed Convertible we originally shared in episode 189. This one represents the most luxurious example in our Cougar roundup, complete with white leather seats, air conditioning, power everything including convertible top, and more. But the real power comes from the 429 Cobra Jet V8 and 4-speed manual transmission, demonstrating that Cougars can be both refined and rowdy at the same time.

3. 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 CJ Convertible: Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 342

We turn to the dark side with our next prowler, a 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 428 CJ Convertible. The Cougar’s skin was new for ‘69, with deeply sculpted body lines and hidden headlights behind the detailed grille. We really dig the black hood scoop and red pinstriped accents, too. But this one is not just a looker… a 335 HP Cobra Jet 428 V8 brings the heat when the gas pedal hits the floor. And although this one shifts automatically, it’s still one heck of a ride.

2. Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #110: 1969 Mercury Cougar 390 Eliminator

We shared a small-block 1970 Cougar Eliminator earlier… well, you could order your Eliminators in various flavors! This 1969 Mercury Cougar from episode 110 of Muscle Car Of The Week features all the Eliminator styling… the hood scoop, the rear spoiler, lower front air dam, the racing mirrors, Eliminator stripes, and backs the looks with a high-grunt 390 V8. Mercury was big into drag racing in the late ‘60s, and the Eliminator wore lots of go-fast parts for those who dabbled in the art of street competition.

1. Muscle Car Of The Week Video #59: 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E 427

Finally, we present a Cougar that has been wildly popular with Muscle Car Of The Week fans, myself included! It’s a 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E, powered by the legendary Ford 427 “side oiler” V8. Very few of the ‘68 Cougar big-inch cars were 427s, and we think this one is one of 101 or so made being a GT-E and NOT an XR7. The E cars were a bit less luxurious than the XR7s, but this one is still stylish and comfy, and the hydraulic lifter 427 is as civil as one can be, building 390 HP and 460 lb. ft. of torque. It’s styling is understated, but that’s what makes cars like this one so much fun.
