Personal Car Project Updates (29:32 – 58:56) – Mike gives an update on his award-winning Pontiac GTO, which has suffered a major engine failure. He discovered a dropped valve, and the engine is locked up. Kevin talks about his Ford Galaxie and the progress he has made with its power steering system and sound system. He also discusses using an AI tool to create enhanced images of cars for the V8 Speed and Resto Shop website.

This captivating customized 1959 Chrysler Saratoga is nicknamed “Sara-To-Go”, and for good reason. Sure, it features some excellent traditional kustom styling cues – like the lowered stance, 1957 Chevrolet BelAir trim, smoothed grille, 1958 Saratoga headlights, upper grille bar, and bumper, and other nip-and-tuck tricks. The ’58 Tahitian Coral paint and charcoal accents really pop, and the brushed modern wheels bring it all around visually. But the fun is just beginning with the look of this smooth ride. This project, penned by designer Murray Komant, is one of many bespoke Black Label concepts brewing at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop.
This Saratoga gets its “go” from a warmed over, full-roller Mopar 413 Max Wedge, because everyone has a Hemi these days, right? Bolted to a modern 10 speed automatic, or a 6-speed stick if you wish, this high-tech version of a classic Mopar torque monster featured aluminum heads and intake, high-end EFI, and a fully coated and balanced rotating assembly. Modern suspension design and steering comfortably manage the twisties, with electric assist brakes, forged wheels, and grippy rubber do their thing down low.

The V8 Speed and Resto Shop Black Label Experience – More Than A Car
Black Label customs appeal to a unique personality who is fueled by an exclusive experience. These elements are designed to deliver a one-of-a-kind journey, truly crafted around personal preferences, crafting a vehicle and experience that is impossible to duplicate and therefore the only one of its kind.
Loosely based on a 1932-1934 Ford roadster, this one combines elements of a high-end European sports car with traditional American Hot Rod. An all-steel, highly sculpted and elegant Hot Rod incorporating top-level elements designed to provide a stunning looking ride with hot performance, but with a refined personality.
This stunning 1948 Oldsmobile Futuramic 98 Coupe blends traditional Kustom touches blended with modern technology, comfort, and road feel. In this case, we already own the car and are ready to start the transformation for an individual looking to steal the show and then devour the miles on the wide open roads.
This awesome 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk concept features a lowered stance on a performance chassis, modern supercharged power, Halibrand-style wheels, and a great retro-themed color scheme. Look closely at the gold in the fins… there’s a lot going on in there! Understand all the workings of an internal combustion engine, including design, theory, operation, and performance modifications.
Possess knowledge of all engine parts and their functions.
Ability to identify failure points and diagnose internal engine issues.
Understand engine and valve train geometry, camshaft operation and specifications, seat pressures, head flow, cam timing, oiling systems, and other internal systems.
Understand the effects of performance modifications to engines and how to implement them.
Possess knowledge of the differences between daily-driver, weekend cruiser, and various levels of high-performance engines.
Rebuild vintage and original engines for re-use in restored classic and muscle cars.
Have familiarity with aftermarket and high performance engine products.
Understand the operation of power adding devices such as superchargers and their internal engine requirements.
Be resourceful in finding specifications for vintage engines to facilitate their repair or rebuild.
Operate lathe, milling machine, engine parts Operates machine lathes to modify water pump castings, piston heads, valves and other such automotive components.
Operate boring and crankshaft grinding machinery.
Clean parts, before and after machining in agitator type cleaning tanks to remove grease and oil particulates.
Operate lathe, boring, or honing machines to refinish internal surfaces of bearing connecting rods.
Verify dimensions using micrometres, calipers and height gauges to ensure adherence to tolerance and specifications.
Ability to make recommendations to achieve performance goals of an engine.
Apply modern technology to vintage engines where required / requested, such as coatings, sealers, main seals, etc.
Grind metal surfaces of engine blocks and cylinder heads using portable and fixed machinery.
Repair cracks in engine cylinder heads or other vehicle parts using heliarc welding equipment.
Operate drum lathe to resurface brake drums or discs.
Operate flywheel grinder to resurface flywheels.
Assemble engines in short, long or full assembly configurations.
Ability to effectively work with individuals at all levels including management, customers, vendors and co-workers.
Ability to work independently.
Strong organizational skills.
Reconditioning various parts such as heads and connecting rods, assisting with or performing crank, valve and flywheel grinding and the installation of valve seats, helicoils, sleeves and valve guides.
Operate various other shop machines as needed such as drills, lathes, mills and other shop hand tools.
