Flipping the Bird some Boost

At the V8 Speed and Resto Shop, we’re pumped to work on a 1976 Pontiac Trans Am that’s already a standout. With an LS3 engine and T56 6-speed manual transmission pumping out 485 rwhp on the dyno, this TA is a solid performer. The owner wants more power, and we’re delivering with an Edelbrock E-Force supercharger.

The customer’s plan? “I currently have an LS3/T56 6-speed manual transmission in my TA. The motor made 485 rwhp on a dyno. I would like to supercharge this motor. A low-profile blower is needed as I have the hood scoop attached to the hood, not much clearance.” We love the vision—this car’s LS3 swap and hood scoop setup are cool choices, and we’re excited to take it up a notch.

The Edelbrock E-Force is perfect here: low-profile for the tight clearance, yet powerful enough to transform this LS3. We’ll integrate it seamlessly, tuning everything for peak performance. The V8 team can’t wait to hear this TA roar with its new boost.

There’s talk of a paint job too—maybe 2022 GM Shadow Metallic with gold decals and 17″ x 9″ Yearone honeycombs in gold-bronze. If it happens, this weekend driver will look as fierce as it runs. Stay tuned for updates!

Adding some “Bad” to the Bandit!

Calling all Trans Am fans! Buckle up, because V8 Speed and Resto Shop is taking a classic 1977 Firebird and turning it into a pro-touring monster. This isn’t your average T-Top Trans Am – it’s a non-T-Top model that’s about to receive a complete overhaul.

Take A Ride In This 1977 Pontiac LS3 Trans Am Video!

530 Horsepower Heart Transplant

The centerpiece of this transformation is a brand new LS3 V8 engine. This beast pumps out a whopping 530 horsepower, a far cry from the original engine’s output. To handle all that extra power, the shop is also installing a 4L70E overdrive transmission.

Straightening The Curves

But it’s not just about straight-line speed. V8 Speed and Resto knows that a pro-touring car needs to handle corners like a dream. That’s why they’re outfitting this Trans Am with a Global West suspension system. This upgrade will ensure precise handling and confidence-inspiring grip. YearOne 17″ wheels complete the look for any Trans Am!

Comfort is also important, even for a car built for performance. The shop isn’t forgetting about everyday usability. They’re installing a Vintage Air A/C system to keep things cool on those hot summer days.

To keep the driver informed, the classic instrument cluster is being replaced with a modern Dakota Digital gauge setup. This will provide all the essential information in a clear and stylish way.

Follow Along as we complete the transformation of this Trans Am and set it free on the open road!

This 1978 Pontiac Trans Am is transforming into a high-end Pro Touring car at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop. Power comes from a Chevrolet Performance LS3 V8, and it is installed in a Detroit Speed hydroformed front subframe. It’s backed by a Tremec T-56 6-speed manual transmission, sending power back to a fully independent rear suspension IRS system from Heidts.

The Trans Am is a full build at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop, and was stripped to bare steel before being sprayed in a protective epoxy primer. The body had minimal rust, so it is in the test fit stage in this video. Subscribe to be updated on the progress of this car as we do all the mechanical upgrades, body and paint, complete interior, and tuning.

This clean 1979 Pontiac Trans Am came to the V8 Speed and Resto Shop in need of some major performance upgrades. The car was born with an anemic Oldsmobile 403 V8 engine coupled to a 3 speed automatic transmission. We did an initial dyno run to find it only made 168 horsepower at the rear wheels, which might have been okay for 1979, but definitely not cool for today. The answer to this problem lies in the form of a Edelbrock supercharged Chevrolet performance LS3 V8 backed by a 6-speed T56 Magnum transmission.

The Trans Am is going to receive a new Roadster Shop chassis for better stiffness and handling. The E Force supercharger relies on an upgraded camshaft from Comp Cams, and is capable of making over 800 horsepower running on E85 fuel. We will be sharing complete build and final dyno videos of this car once the transformation is complete.

This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am was originally equipped with a 403 cubic inch Oldsmobile V8, and although it was pretty hot for the time, it just isn’t enough for the owner today.    The car came to the V8 Speed & Resto Shop for some high-performace upgrades including a GM LS3 485 HP V8 engine fed by a Holley EFI system, and it will handle better thanks to a Ridetech Street Grip suspension system with YearOne wheels.   Wilwood brakes will haul it down in short order.  Before all the fun, we had to fix some rusty floors, which was a good time to fabricate a custom firewall for the car as well.   Follow along with all the progress here!
