Ed Tillrock is an amazing artist, hot rodder, and a great friend of all of us at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop. This month, Ed’s outstanding work is featured on the cover – and inside – the latest CARtoons Magazine! CARtoons is part of the DNA of so many of us who grew up with the passion for cool cars, so it’s great to see Ed’s work in the mix. CARtoons Publisher Marc Methot is also a buddy of ours, and we’re honored to be able to call both of these talented car-guys friends. Our advice is to pick up the latest issue and subscribe to CARtoons as soon as you can so you don’t miss it! And if you’re reading this in the future, CARtoons usually has some back issues in-stock, but there’s no guarantee!

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced that the latest Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD) will be officially celebrated on July 14, 2023.  The date marks the fourteenth consecutive commemoration in what is now an annual holiday to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

Intended since 2010 to celebrate the classics of the past and the future, the U.S. Congress has helped launch CCAD by introducing resolutions each year at the SAN’s request.  This year, the U.S. House of Representatives introduced U.S. House Resolution 573 (H. Res. 573).  The resolution was sponsored by co-chairs of the SEMA-supported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus.  These Congressional leaders have been strong advocates for the automotive culture in Washington, D.C., and recognize the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for the automobile’s unique historical place in our history.

It’s a perfect opportunity to drive your Classic or Muscle Car to work!

Help promote this special day: post on social media using the hashtag #CCAD and tag the celebration’s Facebook fan page (@CollectorCarAppreciationDayCCAD).

This 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL rumbles thanks to a 460+ cubic inch 428 fed by two four barrel Holleys on top, and is shifted with a 4-speed manual transmission. The car came to the V8 Speed & Resto Shop for some basic maintenance, as well as bodywork and a repaint . Follow the progress here!

Restoring classic cars is often like archeology, and V8 Speed and Resto Shop team member Mike Bess just had an Indiana Jones moment!   The city of Kimmswick Missouri Historical Society had a historic travel trunk in their possession, brought to the USA by Theodore Kimm from Germany before he founded the town.   The problem was that it was locked.. with no key.    Read the story of how Mike Bess called upon his trove of historic artifacts to gain access to the mystery trunk!

A couple of years ago, the Kimmswick Historical Society purchased a travel trunk from the estate of a long-time Kimmswick resident. The KHS really wanted to own this trunk because it was the trunk that Theodore Kimm (the founder of Kimmswick) traveled with when he immigrated to St. Louis from Germany in approximately 1835.  We now owned the trunk, but there was one problem… we could not locate a key to unlock the trunk. We knew it had to be one of those old-time long, skinny keys. The word went out to family and friends, and we must have tried 1,000++ keys. We put the key search on pause, and removed the pins from the hinges. We were “certain” that the trunk had to contain important travel documents, or Mr. Kimm’s journal, or something else as equally exciting. No such luck. The previous owner had stored several blankets in the trunk. We continued our search for the key. Perseverance pays off. Two weeks ago, a gentleman visited our Burgess-How Log Cabin. Nadine Garland told him the story and he asked to see the trunk. She brought him to the Museum and he spent a while examining and measuring the lock. He said that if he didn’t have a key, he could make one. Yesterday, Mike Bess returned to the Museum with the KEY!!!! KHS members are very happy because now we can freshen up the trunk and display it properly. Thank you Mike Bess! You are the Best.

It’s really cool to hang around with people who are really passionate about what they like, and on this episode of the V8 Radio Podcast, Kevin Oeste and Mike Q-Ball Clarke chat about what it’s like to get excited about what you like to do.   Kevin references music producer Rick Beato and a recent interview with guitar virtuoso Nuno Bettencourt and how jazzed Nuno was to share his passion and stories, much in the way car enthusiasts do all the time.   Later, we get an update from Mr. Q on working at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop and how that’s all going.  Then, they touch on the new Bonneville Up To Speed podcast, some special V8 Radio Podcast shout-outs to new friends made through this podcast, Automotive Trivia, an announcement about V8 Radio stickers, some Hot Rod Magazine stories, and much more!   Listen, like, subscribe, and review this episode of the V8 Radio Podcast!

Back in 1963, Craig Breedlove famously set the world land speed record in the Spirit Of America, returning the title to the United States from Englishman John Cobb.  And although Breedlove went on to set more records and go much faster than the 428.37 speed he achieved that day, we thought it would be fun to tell the story straight from a first hand account written in the pages of a 1963 Sports Illustrated Magazine.    This is a great story, with quotes from Breedlove, and a historic vantage point from a very exciting time in land speed racing history.   We hope you dig it!   Hosted by Kevin Oeste.

The V8 Speed and Resto Shop was tasked with returning this red and white 1966 Corvette 4-speed roadster back to the road! It’s a factory air conditioned car, powered by a small block 327, and has been in storage for years. We’re looking forward to hearing it come alive!
