A New Version Of An Old Friend

This cool 1966 Chevelle is the second for it’s owner Larry Frees, who might be familiar as the caretaker of the β€œMr. Chevy” 1955 Chevy gasser and hauler ramp truck.     He had a Marina Blue β€˜66 Chevelle in his youth, and this car connects him to the car he had long ago. Larry provided us with the beginning of the restoration story as it unfolds in the V8 Speed & Resto Shop.   The car turned out beautifully, after some sheet metal surgery, laser-straight bodywork, and a custom color brewed in-house… named “Tropical Frees!” It’s putting out over 400 horsepower, it rides on air, and looks fantastic!

Highlights of the Build

  • True SS 396: A real 138 VIN 1966 Chevelle SS, reimagined with passion and precision.
  • Custom Powertrain: Features a bored-out 396 to 402ci engine with a full roller valvetrain, paired with a Richmond 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive and Holley fuel injection.
  • Air Ride Suspension: Fully adjustable air ride system for a smooth, customizable ride.
  • Body and Paint: New quarter panels, trunk floor, tail pan, and deck lid, with meticulous metalwork to ensure tight, uniform gaps. Painted in a unique “Tropical Freeze” aqua-teal with pearl and metallic flair.
  • Custom Interior: Two-tone Fawn and Buckskin interior with a metallic cardboard-inspired dash, Dakota Digital gauges, Vintage Air AC, and a hand-painted tropical graphic.
  • Modern Touches: LED taillight inserts, 17″ chrome Craig SS wheels, and a smoothed rear package tray with flush 6×9 speakers.
  • Day Three Philosophy: Because it was not a numbers matching, all original car, it was built with a blend of classic SS 396 style with modern upgrades like fuel injection, air suspension, and enhanced power (over 400 HP!).

Why This Build Stands Out

This Chevelle isn’t just a restorationβ€”it’s a reimagining of a classic, balancing authenticity with modern performance. Our team at V8 Speed and Resto spent months refining every detail, from TIG-welding panels for precision fitment to block-sanding the body for flawless reflections. The result is a car that looks like it’s carved from a single piece of steel, with a vibrant custom color and a roaring exhaust that demands attention.

Below are just some of the Chevelles we’ve restored, modified, upgraded and repaired over the years at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop.

Does a high-quality restoration stand up over time?

The V8 Speed and Resto Shop crew performed a complete restoration on this sweet 1969 Chevelle SS. The V8 Speed & Resto Shop team stripped the body, replaced the floors and trunk floor, assembled the body on the restored chassis, and performed bodywork and paint on this award-winning 1969 Chevelle. It’s powered by a big block Chevy V8 and a 5-speed Tremec transmission. The work was done back in 2014, so we thought it would be cool to revisit the car and see how a high-quality complete restoration looks over ten years later.

Fortunately, this 1969 Chevelle street machine still looks fresh today, and the owner takes great care of the car and drives and shows it when he can. Over the years, the car has only required a few maintenance items, but has also received several upgrades like a second set of wheels, Wilwood brakes, and a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission conversion. You can see those upgrades and the original restoration video in the links below.

If you’re looking for a restoration or a restomod Muscle Car, a stock or updated Classic, or even a full custom or hot rod, we’re always happy to chat about making your dream ride come true at the V8 Speed and Resto Shop!

V8 Speed and Resto Shop Logo

At V8 Speed and Resto Shop, we live for the roar of classic American muscle cars, and few are as iconic as the 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396. This black beauty rolled into our shop needing some attention in the appearance, performance, and cruising manner departments to elevate it from great to extraordinary. Our team dove in, upgrading nearly every aspect of this Super Sportβ€”from its bold exterior to its powerful heart under the hood. Here’s the story of how we turned this Chevelle into a showstopper that’s ready to prowl the streets.

    Power and Performance Upgrades

Under the hood, the Chevelle’s 396 big block was transformed into a powerhouse. An Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and cylinder heads were paired with a COMP Cams retrofit hydraulic roller camshaft and Howards lifters for smooth, reliable performance. ARP stainless bolts and Fel-Pro gaskets locked everything in place. A set of ceramic-coated 1 3/4-inch headers from Doug’s and a 2.5-inch stainless exhaust system from Pypes, complete with Chevelle-specific tips, gave this beast a deep, throaty growl that turns heads.

To harness all that power, we upgraded the suspension with Global West control arms, a rear coil-over conversion kit with Viking double adjustable shocks, and a front coil-over setup for stock ride height. For stopping power, Wilwood 12-inch drilled and slotted rotors with black calipers were installed front and rear, along with flexline kits and a Lokar parking brake cable union, ensuring precision and safety.

    A Refreshed and Authentic Interior

Inside, we crafted a cabin that’s as bold as the exterior. A black loop carpet from ACC set a sleek foundation, complemented by a rosewood steering wheel kit with an SS horn cap from Ground Up. The horseshoe console kit from Restoparts was installed, though it’s slated to return to the customer for a personalized touch later. New armrest pads and bases, door sill plates, and interior door handles from OPGI brought the cockpit back to life, feeling fresh yet true to the Chevelle’s 1969 roots.

No detail was too small. Air vent balls and bezels, a dome light kit, and a glove box light switch from OPGI enhanced functionality, while dash vent ball fuzzies from ss396.com added an OEM touch. The SS 396 interior door emblems from Ted Williams Enterprises were the cherry on top, exuding pure class and authenticity.

    Modern Comfort for Classic Cruising

This Chevelle isn’t just about raw powerβ€”it’s built for comfortable cruising. A Vintage Air A/C system, including a compressor, evaporator, and condenser, keeps the cabin cool on hot summer drives. For the perfect cruising soundtrack, we added a Kicker 10-inch powered subwoofer and a Custom Autosound 3 1/2-inch dual speaker assembly, wired with Skar RCA cables and Kicker adapters for crisp, modern audio that complements the classic vibe.

    A Show-Stopping Exterior

The first step was giving the Chevelle’s exterior the attention it deserved. We installed a deluxe grille kit with center molding, paired with new headlamp bezels and grille extensions, all sourced from OPGI. These upgrades gave the front end that aggressive, unmistakable SS look. β€˜SS’ badges and 396 emblems were meticulously placed on the fenders, proudly declaring its Super Sport heritage. Wheel opening moldings and drip rail moldings added crisp, clean lines, while a wiper arm and blade set from National Parts Depot ensured functionality matched the style.

To perfect the stance, we fitted polished Magnum 18-inch wheels from REVβ€”18×8 up front with 245/40R18 Continental tires and 18×9 in the rear with 275/35R18s. Secured with Gorilla lug nuts, these wheels blend modern flair with classic muscle car attitude, making this Chevelle stand out at every car show.

    Finishing Touches for Perfection

With the major upgrades complete, we focused on the details that make this Chevelle exceptional. A Napa Group 34 battery, Powermaster alternator, and MSD HEI distributor ensure reliability for years to come. Soffseal weatherstrips and RestoParts radiator mount bushings add durability, while every molding, seal, and emblem was aligned with precision. From the smallest gasket to the largest component, every part was chosen to make this Chevelle better than new.

    We Can Revive Your Ride

The 1969 Chevelle SS396 now stands as a masterpiece of style, power, and comfort. At V8 Speed and Resto Shop, we’re proud to breathe new life into classics like this, blending vintage soul with modern performance. Bringing New Life To A Big Block Chevelle

The color is an eye-catching pearl metallic black offset with an original style Chevelle SS 396 stripe in vivid red. The V8 Speed and Resto Shop fabrication shop and body and paint departments were happy with deep color and arrow-straight bodywork.

Frame Off Restoration with Subtle Performance Improvements

The interior was restored featuring a Vintage Air A/C system and upgraded stereo. Leather seat covers in the original bucket seat patterns were installed. The V8 team installed shoulder belts in front and back for safety, and restored the original dash cluster. Brakes were upgraded to Wilwood 4-wheel disc units for better stopping power.

The team completed the wiring, plumbing, brakes, stainless exhaust, interior, and all aspects of the exterior restoration before driving and tuning the Chevy 454 powered Chevelle. The car won awards at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals in Chicago, and was later treated to a Tremec TKO 600 5-speed manual transmission from Modern Driveline with hydraulic clutch for way more driving fun.

The team at Hemmings Muscle Machines Magazine knows a cool car when they see one, and wrote a special magazine feature on the 1969 Chevelle! Thanks Hemmings!
