At V8 Speed and Resto Shop, we live for the roar of classic American muscle cars, and few are as iconic as the 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396. This black beauty rolled into our shop needing some attention in the appearance, performance, and cruising manner departments to elevate it from great to extraordinary. Our team dove in, upgrading nearly every aspect of this Super Sport—from its bold exterior to its powerful heart under the hood. Here’s the story of how we turned this Chevelle into a showstopper that’s ready to prowl the streets.

Power and Performance Upgrades

Under the hood, the Chevelle’s 396 big block was transformed into a powerhouse. An Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and cylinder heads were paired with a COMP Cams retrofit hydraulic roller camshaft and Howards lifters for smooth, reliable performance. ARP stainless bolts and Fel-Pro gaskets locked everything in place. A set of ceramic-coated 1 3/4-inch headers from Doug’s and a 2.5-inch stainless exhaust system from Pypes, complete with Chevelle-specific tips, gave this beast a deep, throaty growl that turns heads.

To harness all that power, we upgraded the suspension with Global West control arms, a rear coil-over conversion kit with Viking double adjustable shocks, and a front coil-over setup for stock ride height. For stopping power, Wilwood 12-inch drilled and slotted rotors with black calipers were installed front and rear, along with flexline kits and a Lokar parking brake cable union, ensuring precision and safety.

A Refreshed and Authentic Interior

Inside, we crafted a cabin that’s as bold as the exterior. A black loop carpet from ACC set a sleek foundation, complemented by a rosewood steering wheel kit with an SS horn cap from Ground Up. The horseshoe console kit from Restoparts was installed, though it’s slated to return to the customer for a personalized touch later. New armrest pads and bases, door sill plates, and interior door handles from OPGI brought the cockpit back to life, feeling fresh yet true to the Chevelle’s 1969 roots.

No detail was too small. Air vent balls and bezels, a dome light kit, and a glove box light switch from OPGI enhanced functionality, while dash vent ball fuzzies from ss396.com added an OEM touch. The SS 396 interior door emblems from Ted Williams Enterprises were the cherry on top, exuding pure class and authenticity.

Modern Comfort for Classic Cruising

This Chevelle isn’t just about raw power—it’s built for comfortable cruising. A Vintage Air A/C system, including a compressor, evaporator, and condenser, keeps the cabin cool on hot summer drives. For the perfect cruising soundtrack, we added a Kicker 10-inch powered subwoofer and a Custom Autosound 3 1/2-inch dual speaker assembly, wired with Skar RCA cables and Kicker adapters for crisp, modern audio that complements the classic vibe.

A Show-Stopping Exterior

The first step was giving the Chevelle’s exterior the attention it deserved. We installed a deluxe grille kit with center molding, paired with new headlamp bezels and grille extensions, all sourced from OPGI. These upgrades gave the front end that aggressive, unmistakable SS look. ‘SS’ badges and 396 emblems were meticulously placed on the fenders, proudly declaring its Super Sport heritage. Wheel opening moldings and drip rail moldings added crisp, clean lines, while a wiper arm and blade set from National Parts Depot ensured functionality matched the style.

To perfect the stance, we fitted polished Magnum 18-inch wheels from REV—18×8 up front with 245/40R18 Continental tires and 18×9 in the rear with 275/35R18s. Secured with Gorilla lug nuts, these wheels blend modern flair with classic muscle car attitude, making this Chevelle stand out at every car show.

Finishing Touches for Perfection

With the major upgrades complete, we focused on the details that make this Chevelle exceptional. A Napa Group 34 battery, Powermaster alternator, and MSD HEI distributor ensure reliability for years to come. Soffseal weatherstrips and RestoParts radiator mount bushings add durability, while every molding, seal, and emblem was aligned with precision. From the smallest gasket to the largest component, every part was chosen to make this Chevelle better than new.

A cranberry red Chevelle convertible is always a good thing, and when powered by a fuel injected big block Chevy, it just gets sweeter. This one came to visit the V8 Speed and Resto Shop recently for some upgrades and maintenance, including Wilwood disc brakes and a Holley Terminator EFI system.

This very clean 1968 Chevrolet Malibu Sport Coupe came to the V8 Speed and Resto Shop for a little maintenance for the summer cruising season.   The car is wearing a wide variety of options, including power steering and brakes, factory tilt wheel, in-dash tachometer, air conditioning, remote trunk release, power windows, rear sway bar, and more.    We helped the customer locate the car, then performed some needed maintenance to get it back on the road.   Soon, it returned for some updates, like Global West tubular front suspension.    The latest upgrade is a 400+ HP 383 stroker engine from Blueprint Engine Supply! It drives amazingly, and has the right look!
