1967 Pontiac GTO: From Swamp Thing to Showstopper
This 1967 Pontiac GTO wasn’t always the head-turning classic it is today. When it arrived at V8 Speed & Resto Shop, it was a far cry from its former glory. Rusted and neglected, it more closely resembled a “swamp thing” than a muscle car. However, our team of experts wasn’t fazed by the challenge. We were determined to transform this relic into a showstopper!
A Complete Frame-Off Restoration
Our restoration process for this 1967 GTO was a complete teardown, or “frame-off” restoration. This meticulous approach ensures that no area of the car is overlooked. Here’s a closer look at some of the key improvements we made:
- Chassis Strengthening: The GTO’s chassis received a thorough inspection and repairs were made to the body mounts and other critical areas. We then applied a protective epoxy primer and industrial-grade paint finish.
- Suspension Upgrade: We replaced the original suspension system with a high-performance tubular setup from BMR Fabrication. This upgrade enhances handling and performance without sacrificing a comfortable ride.
- Bodywork and Paint: The GTO’s body was media blasted to remove rust and imperfections. Our fabrication team then replaced rusted panels, repaired the dashboard, and built a custom firewall. Once the body repairs were complete, the car was painted in its original Tyrol Blue with a stunning two-stage finish.
Taking the Interior Up a Notch
The interior of the GTO wasn’t spared our restoration magic. Our team reupholstered the bucket seats and refurbished the door panels, dashboard, headliner, and carpet. We also added some modern touches, like a new sound system from Custom Autosound and Dakota Digital gauges.
The Finishing Touches
The final step involved installing a Magnaflow stainless steel exhaust system to unleash the power of the Pontiac 400 V8 engine. New wheels and tires completed the transformation, giving the GTO a truly aggressive look.
A Near-Perfect Score and a Dream Realized
The culmination of our hard work was presenting the finished GTO to its owner at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals show in Chicago. The car was a huge hit, scoring a near-perfect 997 points in the Street Modified class!

Absolutely magnificent work. The video detailing start to finish is perfect. I can’t see how anyone could have any doubts about the quality of work done or available at your shop. Even going back to the old shop and early videos, your work ethic and quality has remained exemplary.
This is my favorite kind of build. Bless yall.

As you mentioned Kevin, better “drivability” was the goal and if it meant an assortment of non stock parts and even Ford brake parts to get it done then so be it. This is what hot rodding is about and kudos for an amazing job on an iconic American classic. đ

First rate restoration and an excellent video production. For my tastes, your resto-mod “recipe” is just the right amount of “mod”… Suspension, disc brakes, fuel injection, vintage aire… but the look is still near perfect period original. Two questions: Did you and owner consider adding a 4L80E overdrive trans, and why was it not included? And, the tire and wheel combo looks great, clearly bigger than stock but perfectly suited to the car. What was your wheel source, size, and tire size?

Boy, now THAT is a complete frame-off restoration, the way is SHOULD be done. Some have said that in these type complete restorations, the car ends up being as good as new. I can now see where that might be true. I mean if everything that’s worn is either reconditioned, sand blasted and repainted or replaced, how could one go wrong?

Wow…. I was 10 yrs old and my dad drove up in his brand new ’67 GTO…. blue with black vinyl top. His was a shade darker blue if I remember correctly… although it was close to this color. It had the red striped tires and 400ci w/ auto and hurst shifter. He let me drive it…. sitting on his lap. Lots of memories. That thing would set you way back in the seat when he floored it. My dad was a Border Patrolman stationed in Comstock Texas. Just north of Del Rio Texas back then. Thanks!

Nice Looker & Presentation – and so someday it will end up at Mecum or Barrett Jackson – and the +- $200,000 they spent will change hands – one millionaire to another – I didn’t realize how good we had it when we could buy a used one, less that 10 years old, for less than $1000 – so goes life

First-time viewer. Extraordinary car, extraordinary craftsmanship, and extraordinary video. I believe this is the best automotive video I have ever seen. Super photography, great narration, and superior music. Thank you, thank you, thank you for using some other than the stereotypical louder-than-the-narration-mediocre-screaming-electric-guitar that is generally inflicted on viewers. Truly a professional video.

I’ve been restoring “Muscle Cars” since the mid ’70s and from experience I appreciate all your hard work and care in what you do.
I call this kind of thing “rolling art” and it truly is!! I’m currently restoring a ’69 Mustang Fastback for it’s original lady owner who’s daddy purchased it
for her back in ’69 from Pasadena Ford. It’s all stock and number’s matching in Aztec Turqouise with stock black bucket seat interior, 351, AT, PS and PB.

This car has a special place in my heart. I was born in 1967. When I was little, my mom had two cars in a row with a similar color. First, she had a 1964 Chevrolet Corvair convertible. Next, she had a beautiful 1966 Pontiac Bonneville coupe in a silvery blue. Her next car was a green, 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix. The Bonneville was a 389, I believe, and the Grand Prix was the same engine as that GTO…a big block 400 that would roast the rear tires off the wheels. I guess I have always been a Pontiac guy.

Very nice program presentation here. I was fortunate to have owned a 67 GTO with a 400 and four speed. The difference in mine was that it was a convertable. It was the same color as this one with a black interior. One of the most pleasurable cars I ever owned.

Author: @abcdef-qk6jf
I think when a vehicle needs that amount of replacements – you did a great job. Doing a little restomod to keep it driveable and fun to drive. Keeping it subtle to retain the soul.
—###—
Author: @granddad-mv5ef
First, ’67 is my personal favorite GTO. The entire production is the best I have ever seen, starring of course, the restoration. Much has changed in the automotive paint world since I left it 35 years ago. The supplier for whom I worked sold DuPont and Ditzler and we stocked factory pints of Spies Hecker for our Benz dealers. Seeing that only one name of the three remains surprises me not a little.

Awesome job and color! I’ve seen a few of those in high school, but the ones I loved the most were that burgundy red color with a black vinyl top. Two seniors who were friends then. One had a 66 and the other a 67. They were both burgundy/black vinyl and polished in the school body shop. One had a 389 engine and the other a 400. Both beautifully done, inside and out!

Author: @tflnorthamerica4585
This is really incredible workmanship and attention to detail but it’s one of the many reasons I choose not to get an old car and restore it. It’s pretty hard to find a shop that will do quality work in replacing pretty much all of the metal. I can do a lot of things on my own but that’s one thing I would need help on so that’s a big hurdle. Cleaning up a frame in restoring it is not such a big deal but all that new sheet metal lining up definitely takes a tremendous amount of talent.

Great show no doubt when I was about 13 years old. My brothers friend had a 67 GTO red with a white vinyl top and white and black interior and they found the total Trans Am and put the 400 drivetrain in it and air-conditioning and Iâll tell you why I always wanted one of those cards when I grew up. I never got one, but I still appreciate them like I did then.

I do like the better than new restoration of cars. This one appeared to have the right balance of modernized and original parts. I think back to some of the cars that I have owned and a process like this applied to them would be an amazing sight to see. I would drive them too. Thanks for sharing this project with us. I think my great Uncles 73 Chevrolet Caprice would be a fun one to run through this process. Not a muscle car but still it brings back some good memories.

You doing a magnificent job .. The car was absolutely beautiful and I love the colorâŠ. I enjoy the way that you present everything that you do on the car and document it and show it to the people âŠ. Again you done a fabulous job I had a 67 Firebird that was that color⊠I have owned four GTOâs 68 and 69âsâŠ. I have a 69 now that I am satisfied in keeping, I have redone the motor through the rear end âŠ. It has the 400 engine board out to 472 , Edelbrock heads an intake .. Barry Grant speed, Demon carburetor .. muncie, four speed , 3.73 rear end âŠ. With all the work that was done on the heads and pistons it is pushing right at 600 hpâŠ. If I listed everything that was done it would up a whole page ⊠But love the GTOâs

Very nice job goes to show you can take any car and bring them back even better than new provided all of the parts are available which is not always the case. Have to say was a little leary of the motor since it was an older rebuild but seems to have worked out just fine.

Wow, what a great video highlighting this incredible restoration. With the possible exception of being a 4-speed rather than an automatic, a â67 GTO in Tyrol Blue with a black top and interior is one of my all time top three dream musclecars. You all did a magnificent job on this one and the modifications are just right; maintaining the soul of the car but adding to the driving experience. And one thing is for sure, this begs to be driven. Iâve always enjoyed the Musclecar of the Week features and I look forward to the restoration features as well. Thanks for sharing, it made my morning and you have a new subscriber.

Finally an automotive
professional / spokesperson who knows cars and what to do! Some of the other videos are a joke; the goofy person finds a car and talks about the color of the car and history of the car, but not THE details.
Thank you
Congratulations to the family.

I donât know if itâs possible to imagine how much discipline It takes to resolve to continue restoring a vehicle when it requires resurrecting it from a state of being under life support. By comparison, the structural walls and interior of an old building are torn down and disposed of, leaving its facade being held in place by a retaining wall as the only testament to history. 22:47

I bought a 66 Lemans Tempest when I was 15 (44 yrs ago). Me & my buddy rebuilt the 326, it had over an inch of sludge in it. We bodyworked it for paint, only had one dent in the rear 1/4.
I drove it for 2 yrs until I decided to drive to school when it snowed. I lost control passing my school bus & hit a pole right behind the passenger door, it was bad, broke the tranny in half. I almost made it back home but broke down, and vandals broke the rear window, driver’s & 1/4 window out of it. I had it towed to a junk yard & got $25 for it. Damn I miss that car.

back in 69 that’s all that was rolling around for the most, MUSSEL! brand spankin new.. so many nice cars back then, today its yuk, maybe they have bluetooth or lane sensing but nowhere near as nice as the muscle

I wouldn’t term this a ‘restoration’ as the original car was a rust bucket and the only piece that was ‘original’ was the power train and frame. If it was a real restoration it would have been returned back to factory original specs every nut and bolt would be original, all the parts OEM and the paint would be vintage. This is really a resurrection and a alteration to modern technology, which is cool and to each there own but not truly a factory concours restoration.. You missed the factory pin stripe that was on every 67 GTO I ever owned by the way.
